Reiterating its commitment to seventh art and contemporary creation, CHANEL became for the first time a partner of the Film Festival of Villa Medici. Founded in 2021 by Sam Stourdzé, director of the Académie de France in Rome – Villa Medicis, to celebrate the relationship between contemporary art and cinema, the festival takes place from 14 to 18 September in one of the most emblematic places of Rome and French culture in Italy.
On the programme: five days of screenings and meetings with international directors, at the end of which will be awarded a Villa Medici Award for Best Film and a Jury Prize. To celebrate this first year of partnership, CHANEL and Villa Medici organized on September 15 in the salons of Villa Medici a cocktail followed by the screening of the film « Children of others » by Rebecca Zlotowski, in the presence of director and actress Anne Berest. Actresses Rebecca Marder, Linda Caridi and Denise Tantucci, directors Gabriele Mainetti and Andrea De Sica, and key figures from the Italian film industry were present at this event.
CHANEL and cinema Between CHANEL and cinema, it is a long story of unwavering friendships, initiated by Gabrielle CHANEL herself, pursued by Karl Lagerfeld and then by Virginie Viard today. Born at the same time as the seventh art, Gabrielle Chanel established ties with many directors including Robert Bresson, Louis Malle, Jean Cocteau and Jean Renoir. From the golden age of Hollywood to the modernity of the New Wave, she signed Gloria Swanson's costumes at Mervyn LeRoy, Jeanne Moreau's at Antonioni, and Delphine Seyrig's at Alain Resnais and François Truffaut. After long dressing Stéphane Audran at Claude Chabrol, Karl Lagerfeld took CHANEL to Pedro Almodóvar's cinema and Olivier Assayas. It is in Rome itself, in the mythical Cinecittà studios, that the creator chose to organize the Trades d'art 2015/16 parade in homage to the links between Gabrielle and Luchino Visconti or Michelangelo Antonioni. Virginie Viard, who likes to surround Sofia Coppola and home ambassadors such as Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, Penelope Cruz or Marion Cotillard, recently dedicated CHANEL's Spring-Summer 2021 Ready-to-Porter collection to actresses and cinema.
