Jil Sander announces the opening of his biggest flagship to date, a new store in the prestigious Ginza neighbourhood in Tokyo.
Extending its footprint in Japan, where the brand has built a strong presence, this new door reaches its 20 outlets across the country, which include among other things the flagship of Omotesando and the women's and men's shops of the department stores, including Isetan Shinjuku and Hankyu Umeda.
Extending over 627 m2 on two floors, the store echoes the work of creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier on the coalescence of ideas and their commitment to building sustainable environments, designed to well simmer and age over time, integrating natural and reused materials. Space features monochrome marble blocks, brass architectural elements and wooden parts. Furniture components consist of recycled plastic from compact disc enclosures. The soils are cut in stone, creating mineral and geological surfaces on two levels. The walls and stairs are in silver blue, rough or striped and textured travertine.
This is the brand's second store designed in partnership with world-renowned Casper Mueller Kneer, after the opening of Bond Street's flagship in London. Designed to create an intimate journey in the Jil Sander universe, it is imbued with Meier's sensitivity and attention to detail.
« We seek to evoke an emotional experience by creating spaces where one feels comfortable, where the first thing one feels is the atmosphere. » – Creative Directors Lucie and Luke Meier
Lighting is essential to the experience. Designed to illuminate the environment as an artist's workshop, with a soft natural light, it creates an intimate setting. A dimension that seems personal and private, suggesting care and concentration. Structural balance and sense of discovery.
« We continue to find beauty in materials, in common and sometimes neglected situations, as well as in mineral materials such as stones and marbles, which speak of the geological time of the Earth. » – Architects Marianne Mueller and Olaf Kneer
A first for the brand, the store offers an exhibition space dedicated to artistic installations. Here, the work of the British sculptor Rachel Whiteread, Bergamo II, fits perfectly into design architecture.
« It is a great honour for my work to be exhibited and to be part of the architecture of this flagship store beautifully designed in Ginza. » – Sculptor Rachel Whiteread
Along with the collections of the ready-to-wear brand, shoes, handbags and accessories, this store will offer an exclusive capsule of silver products, available only at this location. Tribute to Ginza, « Gin » meaning silver in Japanese, the capsule offers a selection of signature articles such as The 7 Days Shirt and The Cannolo Bag, uniquely distinguished by silver accents and materials.
Ginza's new shop will also showcase the brand's new high jewellery range, a range of distinct models made in precious metals, including white gold, yellow gold and diamonds.
